Diego de León 24 · Barrio de Salamanca · Madrid

Before the rooster crows.

Some nights start early. Basque cooking with Mexican accents, a buzzing bar and meals that linger long after dessert — a new neighborhood classic in Madrid.

Wednesday to Sunday · 8 PM — 1 AMFriday to Sunday · 1 PM — 4 PM

The house

A rooster doesn't wait for the sun to come up.

5 Gallos is a new restaurant with the soul of a place that's been around forever. Unfussy Basque cooking with Mexican accents, built on market produce and plenty of live fire, right on Calle Diego de León.

You don't just come here for dinner: you come for the aperitivo that turns into lunch, the after-dinner chat that turns into one more drink. That moment just before, when the energy peaks, is our territory.

The space

Exposed brick, marble and candlelight.

The space sets the tone for everything: our brand patterns come straight off the floor — cream marble inlaid with terracotta — and the palette from the brick walls and the wood of the bar.

The mural

The walls are signed by Teddy Kelly.

The dining room mural is the work of Teddy Kelly, a muralist and illustrator born in the United States and raised in Mazatlán, Mexico. Kelly paints from that crossroads of cultures: Bauhaus, architecture and color as the starting point, with the skateboarding and surfing of a Mazatlán youth in the background.

Kelly's work has traveled to more than ten countries — from France and Japan to London, the United States and Australia — and to brands like Vans, Hot Wheels and Toyota. On Diego de León, Kelly left figures in wine red, terracotta and cream, and a signature: Teddy Kelly 26, Madrid.
